Monika Novaković, PhD (1995, Sremska Mitrovica) is a musicologist, Research Associate at the Institute of Musicology SASA (whose work she joined in 2018) in Belgrade. She completed her BA and MA studies in musicology at the Faculty of Music (University of Arts in Belgrade). During her studies, she primarily devoted her attention to incidental music, realizing a master thesis The Whole World (of Music) is a Stage – Remedialization of Music for the Theater by Zoran Erić (under the mentorship of Associate Professor Sonja Marinković, PhD), which was defended in 2017, in which she dealt with the relationship between applied and concert music, problematizing the composer’s transposition of thematic material from music for a play into a work for the concert stage. She enrolled doctoral studies in 2017. She was a member of the Collegium musicum Academic Choir (from 2012 to 2015). She is the recipient of the Vlastimir Peričić Fund Award for the best graduate student in the academic year 2016/2017.
Novaković is a member of the Musicological Society of Serbia (since 2019), a member of the Royal Musical Association’s Shakespeare & Music Study Group (UK) (since 2020), and is also a member of the Music Writers’ Section of the Serbian Composers’ Association (since 2021). From June 2018 until the end of 2019, she was engaged in the project of the Institute of Musicology SASA, Identities of Serbian Music from Local to Global Frameworks: Traditions, Changes, Challenges (No. 177004), which was funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia. She participated in the Beyond Quantum Music project, which was co-funded by Creative Europe with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, the Creative Europe Desk Serbia and SOKOJ (Beyond Quantum Music (October 2019–December 2022) Grant No. 607659-CREA-1-2019-1-RS-CULT-COOP1, Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency, Brussels, BE, program Creative Europe).
She defended her doctoral thesis Incidental music in Belgrade theaters at the turn of the 21st century at the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade, under the mentorship of Dr. Biljana Leković and the co-mentorship of Dr. Sanela Nikolić.
Although she deals with a variety of topics related to the work of Serbian and foreign composers, the focus of her interest is directed towards the research of applied music – particularly film and incidental/theater music.
